The Aurora - Lantern Sculpture

First small lantern based sculpture. Still trying to decide if I want to try to make it light up or not. Working on a few others at the moment as well. Hope you enjoy.

Back at Twilight for the season

We are back for the season at Twilight Art Collective in West Seattle! Such a fantastic place to have our pieces. They really showcase the art and artists that make the northwest such a vibrant and exciting place to create art in! One Day I will Be a Beautiful Butterfly

Stephanorrhina Guttata in brilliant green and gold metallic coloration with a vibrant strip of red alongside polka dots nestled in a (1930's) German Double Bell Alarm Clock.

Gearcon!

Tooling around Gearcon with my dapper fellow. The fashion show was great, and the vendors area has some friendly faces and interesting finds. If you spy us there give us a wave. Just look for the man in these shoes and I wont be too far away:

Insect-o-vision

Fun stuff putting this guy together, this clock was heaven to work with. The beetle was too, all these in the Rhamphorrhina Ranzania family are a breeze to pin out! Doesn't the clock look like a vintage RCA Television set from the 50's?

Kinda Reminds Me of the Vitruvian Man...Sorta...

Alex has been working on a pocket watch beetle for himself.


He used a Dorcus sp. Stag Beetle from West Irian Indonesia, and an vintage brass pocket alarm clock. The watch is 2.5 inches in diameter (a pretty good size).



Using various pieces of decorative paper, model paint, rubber stamps and fire he layered and distressed the inside back. On the reverse he applied a cutout from a 1918 postcard.



The sky wasn't being very cooperative for these pictures and there is a bit of glare. Special thanks to Shane and Melinda for the new glass face!

Am I Blue

Can you believe it the first day of summer is upon us. And just in time for the start of BBQ season here is another Clockwork Creation.





A beautiful Glenea Cheni (Cicada) nestled in a (navy blue) Vintage 1940's Waturbury alarm clock shell.

Planning to attend GearCon in Portland next month. Can't wait!

Back to the grindstone

Well we're back in action, cranking away at more insect creations. Two new specimens have joined the ranks. Finally figured out how to shoot photos of the red wall clock, it's domed face makes insane glare out in the natural light...but we got a few nice shots.

The cathedral style one was tricky too (had to cut the glass for it ourselves). Love the way it turned out though. Hope you do too!!

A few new things

Well it's been slow going here. Creativity and the flu don't really go hand in hand but,
we have been able to make a couple new things. More Clockwork Beetles are in the works right now, so next post will more than likely be full of bugs :)

SPRING!

Spring is here and its time for us to dust off the winter doldrums and get back to creating. We've been busy finding all sorts of vintage goodness to pair with some really great insect specimens, look for new posts in the coming days.

We also hope to be renewing our spot at the Twilight Art Collective in West Seattle (with pieces you can only find there).

Thought we'd share some process photos. Alex will be working with this beautiful Acrocinus longimanus from Peru.

Fresh out of the box:


After a nice bath to lossen him up he is ready for his acupuncture session: (are you feeling relaxed?)


Just chillin' for a moment in the warm Seattle sun...erh by sun I mean not rain.


The body length of this Acrocinus longimanus 6-7 cms, but with legs outstretched he is a monster 15.8cm (6.25 inches).

Soooooo Happy! New shiny beetles in today's mail. We tried a new source this time and were really surprised at the quality and the speed of delivery. Cant wait to start making stuff!!
